Father U-turn

Olufemi Mayomi, better known as Father U Turn, passed away on Sunday, November 17.

The 36-year-old dancehall artiste, who was one of music acts that ruled the scene in the early ‘90s, died at Abundant Grace Hospital, Ojo, Lagos. He was buried the same day at the Badagry Cemetery.

Father U-turn, even as an orphan, was able to build a successful career as a songwriter, recording artiste, TV presenter and performer.

He hailed from Kabba-Bunu in Kogi State, where he first tried his hands on entertainment, working as a radio and TV presenter.

He had a brief stint at the NTA, Lagos, before signing a deal with Ultima Records, which released his early albums.

He was a little boy with braids and a charming personality. And his signature intro ‘Apoola Berekete‘, was far beyond his stature.

After years of club tours and free gigs, he got his first break when he was signed to one of the biggest record labels of the time, Ultima Records.

Ultima engaged Nelson Brown to work on his first album, which proved to be a huge success.

The hits, African Culture and Shakara, threw him into the national limelight, instantly putting him in the league of bonafide ghetto stars like Daddy Showkey and Daddy Fresh.

His first album was African Culture. His second album Padlock Ur Mouth produced the smash hit Yetunde, a collaboration with Pasuma Wonder.

Damino Damoche

Budding Hip-hop artiste, Olaniyan Damilola, popularly known as Damino Damoche, was shot dead by suspected campus fraternity gang members at the Lagos State University, Ojo.

Eyewitnesses said Damoche’s assailants apparently trailed him on a motorbike after he finished a class test in banking and finance. He was a 400- level student.

The late Hip-hop star was shot twice in the head and in the left hand. He laid dead for several hours before some policemen took his body away in a pick-up van.

Damoche, who was born in Lagos into a family of three, hailed from Ogun State.

He started his music career with some guys called Middle Guys. When things turned awry, he went as a solo artiste and got parties rocking.

His hit songs included Obo To Che, featuring Skaliey; Fall In The Circle ,featuring DRAMA and Feel Aray, featuring Stormy Zino & IQ (House Of Ginjah).

Okeugo acted in many soap operas and home videos before venturing into photography. His burial arrangement was planned by the Lagos State chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) led by Victor Osiagu.

Olanipekun Dagrin

 Grin (21 October 1987 – 22 April 2010) The people’s rapper

Until his death in 2010,  Olaitan Olaonipekun, popularly known as  Da Grin’s music was not as popular  as he appeared to be  today. Immediately after his demise, his music caught fire, and today, everyone is talking about Da Grin’s music. An artiste with a huge talent, Da Grin was reputed for rapping in his native Yoruba language and scantly in English Language.

If he had survived the auto-crash, which eventually claimed his life, on the 22nd of April, 2010, Da Grin would have become one of the mega stars we have around today. He connected with his fans on such a real level. His demise, which marked the end of his career, left a vacuum that is yet to be filled by anyone.

One is sure that he would have won more laurels for himself as well as released more hit albums that would take the nation’s music industry by storm. Perhaps, he would have joined the ‘big boys’ acquiring properties within and outside Lagos  environs.

While some of his fans believed that Da Grin was “a legend”, many others saw him  as “a mentor of all time” whom death snatched from  them.

“Like a fire that burnt through the field of an industry called music; particularly the rap genre, Da Grin came, he saw, but he never conquered death. For the short time he had reigned, where even legends strive to; he created a style that none could imitate; touched the lives of music lovers like no one else; and gave hope to the teeming youths that it is possible to make it in this country if you got style. But, he went up in a blaze of glory when we least expected it at 23.”What else to say…

Michael Jackson, the “King of Pop” died on June 25, 2009 at age 50. His death was sudden and unexpected, leaving many grieving fans wondering what happened. How did he die?

An unidentified man called 911 from Jackson’s California mansion at 12:21 p.m. He reported that Jackson was unconscious and not breathing. In excerpts from the call, the man said that Jackson’s personal doctor was the only other person present and was performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the unconscious Jackson without results. “He’s pumping, he’s pumping his chest but he’s not responding to anything, sir, please,” the caller said. The caller is still unidentified.

Jackson was rushed to the hospital by paramedics shortly after the call. He was pronounced dead at 2:26 pm.

 Heath Ledger died age 28

Ledger died alone in his apartment from an accidental overdose of prescription painkillers, anti-anxiety meds, and sleeping pills. At the time he had just finished filming his role as the Joker in Dark Knight. His death shocked the world.

Amy Winehouse died age 27.

The singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse died in her London apartment from accidental alcohol poisoning. She was the first British woman to win five Grammy awards.
