Pretty Woman: The Musical’: Theater Review

$

End-of-the-’80s nostalgia rules at the Nederlander Theatre, where the cut-and-paste musical version of Garry Marshall’s 1990 romantic comedy, Pretty Woman, is re-creating the cultural-touchstone movie beat for beat, set to a score by Bryan Adams and songwriting partner Jim Vallance that could easily pass for vintage FM-radio pop-rock singles. Just as the film was a stellar vehicle for Julia Roberts, the musical showcases a radiant performance from Samantha Barks as the Hollywood Boulevard prostitute that becomes the “beck and call girl” of a corporate raider. True to the famous closing scene that launched a squillion swoons, he rescues her and “she rescues him right back.”

While the creative team strains a tad too diligently to give the female lead agency and sidestep the Cinderella story’s awkward sexual politics, the show is best appreciated as a retro pleasure, guilty or not, and robust box office in previews suggests that audiences are eager to succumb to its charms.

Sure, people will continue to take issue with its mixed message of female self-realization hitched to an inherently exploitative profession sugarcoated by ensuring that the sex worker remains in charge. And there’s something inescapably queasy about a woman perceived as low-class trash who gets her revenge against the snooty shopgirls that discriminate against her by flashing pricey merchandise purchased with the credit card of the rich guy paying for her services. But anyone looking to get lathered up over gender stereotypes is at the wrong show. Pretty Woman has always been a contemporary fairy tale about an emotionally lost prince as much in need of saving as the princess who struts into his life in patent-leather thigh-highs. It’s a romantic fantasy in which shopping and a high-end makeover are stepping-stones to deliverance, the ultimate success story of the aspirational ’80s.

Marshall first began developing a stage version in 2001 but it stalled until 2014, when he and the film’s screenwriter, J.F Lawton, began shopping the project to various composer-lyricists and theater directors, backed by producer Paula Wagner. In addition to Adams and Vallance, who brought proven songwriting skills that capture the era — the show is set in Hollywood, “Once Upon a Time in the 1980s” — director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell came on board, working on the musical with Marshall for more than a year before the latter’s death in 2016.

Much of the show plays like a scene-for-scene facsimile of the movie, right down to large chunks of dialogue and the iconic outfits worn by Barks as Vivian Ward, both pre- and post-cleanup. That means its chief reason to exist is as a nostalgia exercise, not a fresh entertainment in its own right. The songs are almost superfluous. But judging by the teary sighs, laughs and cheers of recognition, moist-eyed nostalgia appears to be exactly what the audience wants.

Andy Karl and Samantha Barks in <em>Pretty Woman: The Musical</em>
Matthew Murphy
Andy Karl and Samantha Barks in Pretty Woman: The Musical

New York wheeler-dealer Edward Lewis (a dapper Andy Karl) is in Los Angeles to close a billion-dollar deal to buy up a vulnerable shipping company then break it down and sell off the assets. After he bumps into Vivian while seeking directions back to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, he figures he’ll need a trouble-free companion for the intensive week he’s in town, locking in an all-inclusive fee much as he would any other transaction. But mutual feelings develop, strengthening Vivian’s resolve to steer herself onto a better life track and softening Edward’s ruthless business instincts, putting him in the unaccustomed position of wanting to help rather than devour his intended target.

The story is formulaic cotton candy, but the combination of warmly drawn characters with persuasive chemistry and fun fish-out-of-water elements that put a contemporary gloss on a transformation out of Pygmalion made the movie irresistible. The stage iteration is no different, getting you in Vivian’s corner by having her open up early about wanting to get out of prostitution.

The posters lining the theater lobby proclaiming, “Smart Woman,” “Strong Woman,” “Funny Woman,” “Fierce Woman,” “Bold Woman,” verge on Time’s Up overkill. But the slight adjustment that has Vivian capably defending herself from the aggressive advances of Edward’s slimeball lawyer Stuckey (Jason Danieley, unable to do much with a thankless part) makes her less dependent on the traditional chivalrous knight for protection. Even Vivian’s role as a positive influence for change in Edward has been fortified from the movie, making this a two-way exchange even if it incontrovertibly starts on unequal footing.

Barks, a Brit best known as Eponine in the Les Miserables film, makes a sensational Broadway debut. Her characterization is perhaps a tiny bit more sanitized than that of Roberts, what with the latter’s coltish physical command and intoxicating smile, but Barks brings pluckiness, grit, self-possession and sensitivity; she has a rich, expressive voice and strikes a lovely balance between the gangly tomboy and the graceful gazelle that helps sell the essential sense of a pure heart, untarnished by the degradations of the boulevard. You find yourself beaming with vicarious pleasure every time she emerges resplendent in some chic new outfit, re-created by costumer Gregg Barnes with a readily acknowledged debt to the movie.

That said, Vivian probably could have done without the blunt literalness of lyrics by Adams and Vallance like: “It’s true, I sold my body/ But I never sold my soul/ I’ve learned I don’t need anyone/ It’s me who’s in control.” All that is there in Barks’ captivating performance, without the need to spell it out.

Karl is one of Broadway’s most charismatic leading men; he sings and moves with confidence, and from the start shows glimpses of the tenderness toward Vivian that will gradually sneak up and catch him by surprise. But the male lead is definitely the second banana here, and Karl is perhaps inhibited from putting his distinctive stamp on the role by the distracting choice to have him do what’s pretty much an impersonation of composer Adams’ signature raspy vocal style. This is most unfortunate in the classic opera scene — The red dress! The necklace! The snap-shut joke with the jewelry case! — when Edward cuts into snippets from Verdi’s La Traviata with “You and I,” in which he croons, “Darlin’ you look beautiful tonight/ I can’t remember ever seeing anything so right.” It’s not quite as cheesy as some of Adams’ more syrupy ballads (the Barbra Streisand duet, “I Finally Found Someone,” tops that list), but it’s close.

Most of the songs, however, are tunefully easy on the ear and skillful enough at exploring the characters’ feelings. The best are Vivian and Edward’s respective establishing numbers, “Anywhere But Here” and “Something About Her,” as well as Vivian’s melancholy confessional “This Is My Life.” All have been given appealingly mellow ’80s-style instrumentation from orchestrator Will Van Dyke, often enhanced by a gentle country flavor.

Eric Anderson and Orfeh in <em>Pretty Woman: The Musical</em>
Matthew Murphy
Eric Anderson and Orfeh in Pretty Woman: The Musical

Some of the splashier numbers go to the chief scene-stealer in the cast, Eric Anderson, who multitasks with amiable assurance as the “Happy Man,” a colorfully dressed street hustler hawking maps to the stars’ homes on Hollywood Boulevard; the Beverly Wilshire manager Mr. Thompson, who becomes a kind of fairy godfather to Vivian’s Cinderella (the priceless Hector Elizondo in the movie); and a nightclub singer. Those personae effectively merge in the segue from “On a Night Like Tonight” into “Don’t Forget to Dance,” a sequence that is more or less this show’s counterpart to the Embassy Ball in My Fair Lady.

Mitchell’s choreography in that scene, blending elegant ballroom with Vivian’s contagiously explosive gyrations, is more enjoyable than in the brassy “Rodeo Drive.” That celebration of ’80s extravagance just comes off as loud and vulgar, with too little to distinguish the preening fashionistas’ moves from those of the sashaying hookers earlier. Maybe that’s the point? In any case, it doesn’t help that Barnes has outfitted the male chorus here like S&M Versace mannequins.

The song is saved somewhat by the powerhouse lungs and large personality to match of Orfeh as Vivian’s friend and protector Kit De Luca, leaning hard into the stereotypical seasoned hooker with the heart of gold. The most notable departure here from the film script is the chosen career path for Kit’s possible exit out of prostitution. A number of the affectionate sisterhood scenes between Vivian and Kit are shared with gusto by Tommy Bracco, a diminutive but dynamic mover who plays an amusingly curious hotel bellhop as well as participating in the ensemble dance numbers in various guises.

Of those numbers, the biggest miss is the second-act opener, “Welcome to Our World (More Champagne),” a parade of noxious rich folks toasting their fabulousness, which lacks the wit or visual panache of another corresponding My Fair Lady set piece, “The Ascot Gavotte.” Class differences are an integral part of the story, but hitting them on the nose like this with a polo mallet just seems stale.

Working on David Rockwell’s versatile architectural set design — complete with the requisite fire escape and ornate Beverly Wilshire entrance — Mitchell moves the story along at a sustained pace if not a great deal of imagination. He gives the intimate scenes room to breathe and allows Vivian’s moments of triumph or joy, large or small, to resonate, encouraging us to participate directly in her breakthroughs, setbacks and resilient self-determination. If the absence is felt of one indelible part of the movie, Roy Orbison’s “Oh Pretty Woman” (a rights issue or a choice?), the essence of what made it such a hit survives in Barks’ winning performance.

Why Meghan Markle Always Hides Her Hands in Her Pockets, According to a Body-Language Expert

t’s no secret that royal tradition dictates a lot of what Meghan Markle can and cannot do, from why she no longer wears non-neutral nail polish to the reason you will never see her crossing her legs in public. But for once, one of 37-year-old’s choices doesn’t seem to be a result of royal tradition, but a message that indicates something much deeper, according to a body-language expert.

In an interview with OK! magazine, Judi James, a body-language expert and author of the 2008 book, The Body Language Bible, explained why the Duchess of Sussex is almost always seen with her hands hidden in her pockets, if she has them. According to James, Markle’s decision to shove her hands in her pockets signals a desire to hide and minimize one’s appearance. “The classic reason for this very common gesture is that it signals a subliminal desire to hide, especially when the hands are shoved deep into the pockets,” James said.

Likewise, Markle’s habit of keeping her hands in her pockets also suggest a common problem that most of us have when we’re holding one item—in Markle’s case, a clutch—and don’t know what to do with our other hand. Instead of waving it around like a mad woman, Markle keeps her free hand in her pocket to avoid looking awkward in pictures.

“It also helps get over the common problem most of us suffer from, which is not really knowing what to do with our hands when we know people are looking at us,” James said.

What really happened to Mia Sara?

$

Mia Sara almost certainly brings to mind Ferris Bueller’s beautiful and coolly sophisticated (but fun-loving) girlfriend, Sloane Peterson. She of the iconic white fringed jacket, the poolside negligee, and the fabulous “taxicab black” sunglasses. Or perhaps the name conjures up images of the enigmatic Princess Lili, paramour of the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry) and the lovestruck fairytale hero (Tom Cruise) in 1985’s cult fantasy film Legend.

Whatever cinematic figure you associate Mia Sara (born Mia Sarapochiello) with, however, one thing’s for sure: She’s at least as intelligent, intriguing, and multifaceted in real life as she is in any of her movie roles. And, although she’s continued acting — albeit on a much less conspicuous basis — her other artistic accomplishments are in many ways far more compelling than her status as a pop culture mainstay.

Read on to find out what Sara has been up to, and to revisit the era that made “Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?” an eternally memorable household (and classroom) name.

BEAUTY ENTERTAINMENT ROYALS LOVE

Making Ferris Bueller at age 17 wasn’t fun

As enlightening as filming Ferris Bueller may have been, it was also fraught with anxiety — or so Mia Sara explained in an interview with Games Radar.

“Of the main cast, I was the only actual adolescent, so unfortunately for me it was like having your most awkward adolescent year forever memorialized,” she said. “The cast were all lovely but mostly my experience was feeling very out of my depth and, you know, flailing. That’s just the honest truth. I wish I could say it was a lot of fun but it wasn’t for me.”

Sara also commented on her present feelings about the onslaught of publicity that accompanied the film. “If it were coming out today with the same kind of reception and with what you have to deal with now — in terms of attention and publicity — I think I probably would have dug a hole and never come out. But it wasn’t like that back then.”

Chloë Grace Moretz on Destigmatizing Gender Norms & Growing Up in the Spotlight

Chloe Grace Moretz

t 21 years old, Chloë Grace Moretz has starred in more than two dozen movies. She’s been working nonstop since she was 7, but her career really took off when she was 13 and starred as a sass-mouthed superhero in 2010’s Kick-Ass, launching her career from unknown child star to instant teen idol. But Moretz’s success story is more complicated than that. In between box-office buzz and bucket-list magazine covers, Moretz saw her name attached to headlines about her appearance, relationships and feuds. “I’ve had the best and worst moments spread across papers,” Moretz tells StyleCaster.

Michael Simon/startraksphoto.com.

Like most teens, Moretz became negative, which is why, a couple years ago, she took a break from acting to look back on her career and the opportunities that have come with it: campaigning with Hillary Clinton in 2016; starring in a gay-conversion-therapy movie, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, in 2018. “Being a teenager, everything can be incredibly negative because you try to find the worst in things,” Moretz says. “If I talked about this years ago, I would probably talk about the trials and tribulations of being famous. Part of that step back was to reassess all the wonderful things that have come along.”

I’ve had the best and worst moments spread across papers.

But Moretz isn’t keeping what she’s learned to herself. Since her realization that her platform is more than her, Moretz has been using her influence to teach her fans, whether on social media on in real life, that insecurities are normal and a part of growing up. “Yes, there’s prying, and yes, there’s paparazzi, and yes, this and that, “Moretz says. “But I think it’s more important to talk about this beautiful platform and be able to destigmatize something and look at young women and bring them into my circle and go, ‘Hey. You don’t feel comfortable with where you are or who you are? Come here and talk to me because I’ve been there too. We’ve all been there.’ Do you ever truly feel comfortable with who you are? No. It’s a daily process working with yourself.”

Still, Moretz acknowledges that her upbringing is different than most. With photo shoots and red carpets, Moretz knows that she wasn’t an average teen, which is why, through Instagram and campaigns such as SK-II’s Bare Skin Project, she’s conscious of breaking down the fourth wall and showing her fans what they see on screen isn’t always a reflection of real life. “If people are like, ‘Oh my God, you look so beautiful.’ I’m like, ‘I’ve been in two and a half hours of makeup and hair,” Moretz says. “Being able to break that fourth wall and show them, ‘This is what I look like with no makeup on’ is important. I feel so confident with being in front of a camera with nothing more than just me, as Chloë.”

Destigmatizing is something I’ve always wanted to be inherent to who Chloë Moretz is.

Moretz’s next goal is to destigmatize gender norms. Growing up with two gay older brothers, Moretz learned from a young age that gender norms are societal constructs and nothing is standing in her way as a woman. “You should be so proud of who you are as a woman and not allow the stigma of being a woman in this society and societal pressures of being a woman influence or affect who you are,” Moretz says.

For Moretz, her fight against gender norms began years ago when she played video games at a time when “it wasn’t a cool thing for a girl to do.” It’s also one of the reasons she partnered with Oculus Go, a virtual-reality headset, to let her fans know that nothing—not gender norms; not other people—should stop them from being who they are. “I was proud to be like, ‘Oh, yeah. I’m a video-gamer.’ I was telling all my friends that at 13 years old when, at that point in time, it was strictly geared toward boys. Girls didn’t really game and it wasn’t a cool thing for a girl to do,” Moretz says. “Destigmatizing is something I’ve always wanted to be inherent to who Chloë Moretz is and the brand because that’s who I am as a person.”

Ariana Grande Made the Shadiest Dig at Victoria’s Secret on Her New Album

If you’re anything like us, Ariana Grande’s new album, Sweetener, has been on repeat since its release on Friday. But in between jamming out to power-pop songs, like “Everytime,” and crying our eyes out to ballads, like “Pete Davidson,” you might’ve missed this one important—and shady—detail.
On the 25-year-old singer’s song “R.E.M.,” a sleepy mid-tempo love song, Grande name-drops Victoria’s Secret and the lingerie brand’s competitor, La Perla. “What about La Perla? Let Vickie keep her secret,” Grande sings.
Now, if you’re wondering, what’s the beef between Grande and V.S.? We’ll break it down for you. In 2014, Grande performed at Victoria’s Secret’s annual Fashion Show in London where she was almost taken out by an angel’s wing, resulting in this iconic picture.

Though the drama isn’t huge (we’re sure Grande isn’t holding a grudge), it’s still a hilarious Easter egg for fans to pick up on. Likewise, the La Perla mention could also be a nod to Kendall Jenner reportedly leaving Victoria’s Secret in 2017 to sign a contract with the brand’s competitor.

American Horror Story renewed for season 10

The horrors of daily living in the United States appear doomed to continue indefinitely, as American Horror Story has been renewed for a tenth season on FX.

Despite still being in production on its upcoming eighth season, American Horror Story has been officially given the go-ahead to continue into double digits, according to a news item from The Hollywood Reporter.

The eighth season, titled Apocalypse and set just a little bit into the future, is going to be the first major crossover between seasons of the series. Specifically, the eighth season will be mashing up elements from the first season, Murder House, and the third season, Coven, with Taissa Farmiga and Emma Roberts returning to reprise their roles from season three.

Obviously, this is pretty encouraging news for the series’ long-term prospects. Ryan Murphy, the prolific producer who co-created the show with Brad Falchuk, recently signed up for an astonishing $300 million exclusive production deal with Netflix, raising doubts about the level of commitment he would have to continuing work on his myriad FX shows. In addition to American Horror Story, Murphy has helped to create the TV series American Crime Story, Pose, and Feud for the network, among others.

But aside from that unique detail, it’s not too much of a surprise that American Horror Story is getting renewed for a new season, taking a show that launched in 2011 and extending its run through 2020. Since its debut, the show has remained a consistent draw for viewers, even as the quality of the seasons has varied in some fans’ eyes. There’s something to love for everyone in this ever-evolving house of horrors — at this rate, perhaps there always will be.

American Horror Story: Apocalypse will premiere on FX on September 12.

20 Years of Dil Se: What the Malayalam lyrics of ‘Jiya Jale’ actually mean in English

The album of the Shah Rukh KhanManisha KoiralaPreity Zinta starrer Dil Se is unforgettable and one song that stood out was ‘Jiya Jale’. It was the only light-hearted, romantic track in this otherwise intense flick with all the other songs also being in the somewhat dark zone. What also made this song memorable is that it had some lyrics in Malayalam, by Girish Pulthenchri, which gave a nice touch overall. For the Non-Malayalam listeners obviously, it all went bouncer. Dil Se had released in 1998 and this was a time when internet penetration was very weak and hence, securing information was difficult.

Twenty years later, we at Bollywood Hungama finally solve this dilemma and finally present to you the actual lyrics of the song along with the translation in English. Here you go:

Punjirithanji konjikko
Give me a beautiful smile

Munthiri muththoli chindhikko
Steal sweet kisses from me

Vanjani varna chundari vaavae
Oh my beautiful girl

Thaanginnakkath thakadhimiyaadum thanganilaavae hoi
Oh the dancing moonlight

Punjirithanji konjikko
Give me a beautiful smile

Munthiri muththoli chindhikko
Steal sweet kisses from me

Vanjani varna chundari vaavae
Oh my beautiful girl

Thaanginnakkath thakadhimiyaadum thanganilaavae hoi
Oh the dancing moonlight

Thanga kolusallae
You are as beautiful as a golden anklet

Kurugum kuyilallae
You are as mellifluous as a cuckoo

While rumours continue to float regarding the dates of Priyanka Chopra‘s marriage to Nick Jonas, here comes a news about one more film that PC will be working on. Priyanka has apparently given agreed to star with Hrithik Roshan in Rakesh Roshan’s blockbuster superhero franchise Krrish 4.

A source very close to the Roshan family reveals, “Priyanka has definitely given the green signal for the next instalment of Krrish. She has been a part of the first two Krrish films. When Rakeshji sounded her out about the fourth Krrish film she happily agreed”, said a source.

Continuing further about Roshan’s initial apprehension to rope in Priyanka Chopra, the source added, “Since she’s such a big global star now Rakeshji thought she may not want to be part of a desi franchise where she doesn’t play the main character. But Priyanka’s association with the Roshans goes back a long way. She has always been a loyal big-hearted girl. At a time when Sunny Deol was down and out she agreed to play his leading lady because she had made her debut with him. When a down-and-out producer K C Bokadia wanted to complete a project with Govinda and Priyanka, she agreed knowing it would embarrass her career. Loyalty is big for Priyanka,” says the source.

Priyanka Chopra is expected to begin work on Krrish 4 in mid-2019. With two other project—one in India and the other in Hollywood—already in her kitty, what happens to the rumours about her marriage to fiancé Nick Jonas.

Nushrat Bharucha’s identity crisis

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety fame actress Nushrat Bharucha has marked a successful transition from being a girl-next-door to a glamorous desi girl. The talented actress was quite surprised to receive ‘Happy Navroze’ messages from her fans and followers recently on the eve of the Parsi New Year (August 17).

A source says, “Nushrat’s surname is Bharucha because she belongs to the small town called Bharuch from Gujarat. This is what has caused the entire confusion because Bharucha happens to be a very popular Parsi surname.”

“Nushrat who happens to belong to a Bohri Muslim community admires her fans and accepted the Navroze wishes whole heartedly,” the source adds.

Good job with the edit. The only problem is that the face is tilted towards the camera more than in the original, so it looks a bit wonky.

So What Do You Do When You *Don’t* Want to Invite Family Members to Your Wedding?

What happens when you don’t want to invite any family members … or there are just a few you’d like to exclude

If you’re planning a wedding, there will come a time when the excitement from making all the fun decisions, like what kind of cake to order or what style dress you’ll wake down the aisle in, will fade, and the real headaches, the unplanned stress, and drama-filled decisions will rise to the surface. Usually that downward spiral of “what the heck should I do?” comes out to play when you start figuring out the names of who you want to put on your guest list, especially family member’s names, who you hardly even want to invite.

It happens to most people, even the rich and famous, and the royal. Meghan Markle decided to opt-out of sending her father an invite to her much hyped wedding to Prince Harry, and Brody Jenner, who left out a laundry list of step-family members he acquired after his father, Caitylin Jenner married into the Kardashian family, found that the few invitations he did send out to half-sisters, Kylie and Kendall, never came back to him with an RSVP.

So how do you pick and chose which family members make the cut and which don’t? Follow these four steps so that your guest list has the names of people you care about … and not people who you (feel like you) should care about, just because you’re related to them.

1.  Don’t invite when the drama is flaring

If you have unresolved drama with a family member, make a decision on whether or not you want to resolve the issues with them before the wedding or not. If you don’t want any added pre-wedding stress, and your relationship has been rocky in the past, it might be worth it to skip inviting them to your wedding and deciding after you’ve tied the knot whether you want to rekindle the relationship with them. But, if you know having them at your wedding is an automatic trigger for pop-up problems and drama, it might be worth to skip having them on your guest list.

2.  Don’t send a pity invite.

When you think back on your wedding, years later, one of the things you will want to know is that every single person you had there meant something great to you. Skip the pity invitations to family members that you just don’t feel like inviting, but would invite to save face and to keep peace within your family. If close relatives start to challenge why you left certain people off the guest list, explain you wanted to keep your wedding small, intimate, and meaningful.

3.  Don’t invite if the relationship is absent.

You don’t have to feel guilty for not inviting a relative that you haven’t seen in years, hardly speak to, or never had a relationship with. Your wedding isn’t an opportunity to bring family together that wasn’t ever together. It’s not a family reunion or a bonding session with distant cousins or even siblings that you haven’t chatted with in years. If there’s no relationship present, there shouldn’t be an invite sent.

4.  Don’t invite if their RSVP ‘yes’ will make you mad.

Remember, every guest you invite costs you money, a lot of money. If you’re thinking of keeping the peace and sending out invitations to people you hope will RSVP no, don’t send the invitation in the first place. If they respond yes, you’ll be upset and you’ll be out a couple of hundred dollars for each one.

Hailee Steinfeld Is Officially Trying to Make Exposed-Bra Outfits Happen

CAMDEN, NJ – JULY 24: Actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld performs during the 2018 Honda Civic Tour presents Charlie Puth Voicenotes with special guest Hailee Steinfeld at BB&T Pavilion on July 24, 2018 in Camden, New Jersey. (Photo by Gilbert Carrasquillo/Getty Images)

rowing up, exposed bra straps were “scandalous”—perhaps even “trashy” (as our mothers so lovingly liked to remind us). But it’s 2018, we’re adults now and society has (thankfully) begun to move on from that mentality.

These days, celebs like Kim Kardashian West are bringing exposed bras into the mainstream by stepping out in shirtless (but bra-full) ensembles. And other style stars, like Kendall Jenner, have opted for a more covered-up approach—wearing bras over their favorite T-shirts.

But singer Hailee Steinfeld has decided to remind us all she doesn’t follow trends—she sets them. So she got in on the exposed bra movement in a brand new way: She treats her bras like accessories.

MORE: Your Summer Wardrobe Definitely Needs More Metallic Pieces

The 21-year-old starlet has an extensive wardrobe—as evidenced by her top-tier outfit selections at Katy Perry’s Witness tour (which she played on more than one occasion) and the Voicenotes world tour (which she headlined). And that’s exactly why we noticed when she wore the same embellished bra over and over and over again this summer.

Plus, her approach to the exposed-bra trend was totally new—and it lets you have your cake and eat it, too. (Or in this case, get all the skin-bearing fun of an exposed bra and wear a shirt, too.) The bra-as-shirt trend was getting a little repetitive, and the bra-over-shirt trend just wasn’t as fun. Steinfeld managed to strike a balance between the two and rock a look no one else was wearing.

MORE: Trend Alert: Celebs Can’t Stop Wearing the Half-Up, Half-Down Hairstyle

It’s important to note that while Steinfeld’s bra of choice is typically jewel-encrusted, the rest of her outfit is pretty simple. This lets the unexpected accessory take center stage, even when Steinfeld’s the one performing (pun totally intended).

While we’re not sure this trend is necessarily appropriate for everyday wear (just imagine what your boss would say if you wore it into the office), we’re totally into it. Maybe wear it for a girls’ night on the town or, you know, the next time you headline a world tour.

How to Tell if a Relationship Issue Is a Deal Breaker

$

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve just started to call yourself a couple or you’ve been together for years, at some point, almost everyone will learn something about their bae and think, “Holy shit. What have I gotten myself into?”

Relationships have their fair share of turmoil: Infidelity, grief, substance abuse, financial troubles—you know the drill. And even though we might think we know where our line in the sand is, it’s not always as easy to find once you’re actually faced with the decision to stay or go.

So how do you determine whether something is a deal breaker or not? We talked to two experts to find out.

1. Know Your Boundaries

Start simply: Find your line in the sand. “The important thing is really to know yourself and your boundaries,” Dr. Alisha Powell, PhD, licensed clinical social worker, explains. That line can shift over time; you should never feel locked into boundaries you set years ago, but you should be able to identify what you can tolerate and what you can’t.

Give yourself some time to think it over, then talk to your partner. Ideally, you can have this conversation before they cross a line to preempt any conflict. But even if they already have, clearly articulating your boundaries can help you two work through the current conflict and avoid problems in the future.

2. Communicate with Your Partner

The next piece of the puzzle is good old communication. “Can your partner sit with you and be accountable?” Dr. Fran Walfish, PsyD, Beverly Hills relationship psychotherapist and author of The Self-Aware Parent, explains. “Do their words, tone, demeanor and affect communicate that they truly have the capacity to feel the impact of their own behavior on you?”

In order to find out, you’re going to have to have a frank, transparent conversation. The best way to have this talk is to use “I” statements, sharing your feelings, needs and expectations, Powell advises. Then ask your partner to communicate what they just heard you say so you can be sure you’re really hearing each other.

MORE: 9 Signs You’re in a Genuinely Healthy Relationship

“If your partner is willing to work with you and change and is 100 percent into it, then it’s [probably] something that can be worked through,” Powell says. But if your partner is shut down, critical, defensive and un-empathic? “That’s a clear indication that this relationship is not a healthy place for you to be in,” Powell says.

3. Advocate for Compromises

The first two steps work really well for obvious issues—those times when your partner has done something painful, like cheating or spending a large sum of money you hadn’t agreed on. But other times, issues are more complex, and neither of you is necessarily in the wrong. Maybe one of you wants children and the other doesn’t; maybe you have different religious views.

Often, these issues come down to “how powerful the love is in the relationship” as well as how rigid or flexible the partners in the couple are in their stances, Walfish says. If both of you are committed to your partnership above all else, you might be able to find a way through it—though it might require a lot of time, energy and emotional labor.

Given this, Walfish suggests taking your issue to a third party, like a therapist, counselor, pastor or rabbi. “These are very big, important, life-changing decisions, and sometimes they require careful, serious thought and time,” she explains.

MORE: 12 Things Truly Happy Couples Have in Common

And, of course, they require more communication. The goal is to figure out where you and your partner do and don’t agree and whether you can work together toward a similar goal. Through conversation, you may be able to work it out.

Or not. “Sometimes there isn’t a compromise,” says Powell. “But being able to talk it out means being able to recognize when there will be no compromise because something is conflicting with both people’s core beliefs.” Like most things in relationships, how you tell if a relationship issue is a deal breaker is by talking to and listening to each other. And in time, the answer will appear.

Kendall Jenner Claims She Was ‘Misrepresented’ in Interview Shading Less Successful Models

MILAN, ITALY – SEPTEMBER 22: Kendall Jenner walks the runway at the Versace show during Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2018 on September 22, 2017 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Jacopo Raule/Getty Images)

pdate: August 22, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. EST

Kendall Jenner has broken her silence. The 22-year-old model came under fire this week for a comment, which many believe was shade toward models who can’t be “super selective” and must walk in “30 shows a season” to make ends meet. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star took to her Twitter on Tuesday to clarify her and claim that her words were “misrepresented.”

The E! personality went on to say that she understands the sacrifices that other models make to work and make a living before ending her series of tweets with a message to her followers to “cultivate kindness.”

Original story: August 20, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. EST.

Kendall Jenner’s recent comments in Love magazine aren’t going over well in the modeling community. For the magazine’s 10th-anniversary issue, the 22-year-old was asked to look back on her modeling career, which resulted in an answer about how she was “super selective” about her work from the get-go and was “never” a model who would walk 30 shows a season

“Since the beginning we’ve been super selective about what shows I would do,” Jenner said. “I was never one of those girls who would do like 30 shows a season or whatever the fuck those girls do. More power to ‘em. But I had a million jobs, not only catwalks but everything else. The whole combination was very overwhelming and I started to freak out a little bit and needed to take a step back.”

Jenner’s comment eventually made it to Love magazine’s Instagram, where it was seen by dozens of models, including Daria Strokous, Marine Deleeuw and Jac Jagaciak, W magazine first reported. In screenshots on their own Instagram stories, the models criticized Jenner for looking down on models who need to walk in 30-plus shows to make a living. Likewise, many of the models also slammed the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star not acknowledging her privilege, her celebrity family or the fact that she makes more money and has the ability turn down work whereas other models do not.

“‘…Whatever the f–k those girls do’ is do their very best to make their way up AND try to make some money so that they can provide for themselves and their families,” Strokous wrote. “Oh, and it’s 70 shows a season by the way and we are all f–king proud of every single one of the girls that did it.”

Another model added, “‘Those girls’ make expanentially [sic] less for the same job as you…Don’t come from a celebrity family…Weren’t born into privilege like you.”

As of yet, Jenner hasn’t responded to the backlash, and it seems like the critics keep on growing. In response to the controversy, a representative for Jenner gave StyleCaster the following statement: “It was not what she meant. The quote was taken out of context. Midthought she realized the number of shows some models walk a season is closer to 80. The point was that it’s their path and “the more power to them”. She admires their hard work and dedication. It’s an accomplishment.”

Below are several more screenshots W collected of models criticizing Jenner’s comments.

Model Hailey Baldwin stepped out in New York City this Wednesday to accompany her fiancé, Justin Bieber, to the hair salon. The Biebs was in for a much-needed trim, and one can only assume Baldwin, loving partner that she is, was there to offer moral support.

But if I’m being honest, what I care more about than Justin Bieber’s hair or the couple’s presumably supportive partnership is Baldwin’s outfit. Because when I saw it, I did whatever the silent equivalent of screaming “YAAAS” is.

MORE: Hailey Baldwin’s Beauty Evolution from Child Star to Rising Model

The model was clad in head to toe loungewear: a dark gray tank top, black jeans, chunky sneakers and an oversized flannel shirt. Her ensemble is low-key as hell, and the gold jewelry she threw on makes the look even more incredible.

It’s the kind of outfit you wear when you’re too lazy to actually get dressed but too self-aware to walk around in literal pajamas. (Hm, I need something to make my outfit less obviously chill. I know—I’ll throw on gold jewelry!) And since that’s pretty much my go-to aesthetic, I’m very here for this.

MORE: Hailey Baldwin Belts a ’90s Colorblock Windbreaker, Calls It a Dress

The only problem: Baldwin’s ensemble isn’t actually that low-key—at least, the price tag isn’t. Her oversized plaid shirt will run you a nice $1,255 at Mode Sens, and it’s already marked down 35 percent. (So you don’t have to whip out your calculator: The shirt was originally $1,935. That’s nearly $2,000 for a mere flannel shirt. I know. I’m dying, too.)

But you know what? Power moves only. My respect for Baldwin and her not-actually-that-low-key low-key outfit is immense. Keep doing you, girl. And as for the rest of you, I’ve pulled a few similarly styled (similarly expensive) flannel shirts for your browsing pleasure, below.
